President’s Message
Fall is on its way
by Darren Watson
I’m excited about our 2008 auction, which is our primary fundraiser for the Heart of America Fly Fishers. Mark Borserine worked very hard to compile a great list of items to be auctioned off. I want to personally thank all the donors, all of whom were very generous in donating their time and merchandise. I would encourage generous bidding for the items that interest you. I look forward to seeing you at the auction!
The holiday season is approaching fast and our last outing for 2008 is around the corner. Remember to schedule for our annual banquet at Bennett Spring. It’s great fishing and we have a good time. Hopefully we won’t have to worry about an ice storm this year.
HOAFF Annual Banquet
December 5 – 7, 2008
by Mark Borserine
It is time again to mark you calendars, clear your schedules and make your advance reservations for this years Annual Banquet at Bennett Spring.
For those of you that didn’t get enough fishing in 2008 this may be your last chance. The weatherman has promised a mild sunny weekend with warmer than normal temperatures. The trout promise to be big, hungry and easy to catch. There is absolutely no reason not to attend.
HOAFF will provide a chili & hotdog lunch Saturday December 6th. Plan to be at the picnic pavilion across from the big spring around noon. The proper attire will be waders and vests.
The banquet will be held at Ollie’s BBQ & Steakhouse on Highway 64 just east of Bennett Spring. The bar will be well stocked and there will be plenty of BBQ for everyone. Hospitality hour begins at 6:00 p.m. and dinner at 7:00 p.m. Last year we even got to watch the Big 12 championship game but I don’t know if our timing is as good this year.
Reservations are on your own. The state park has a limited number of cabins open during this time and many of our members also stay at the Sand Springs Resort. The phone numbers just in case, Bennett Spring - 417-532-4307 / 800-334-6946 and Sand Springs Resort - 417-532-5857.
Montauk State Park & the Current River
by Ron Carruthers
What a beautiful time of the year for an HOAFF outing at Montauk State Park. The weather was never better, maybe even a little too good for fishing. The fall color was abundant but still a week or two from its’ peak.
On Friday afternoon there were already plenty of fishermen getting an early start on the weekend. I had some luck with soft hackles and Peet Crissey used a bluewing olive dry fly with a dropper to bring several stockers to his net. The Friday night fish buffet at the Lodge topped off a good day.
It was off to the Current River on Saturday morning. Peet Crissey and Kevin Carril started on the river just outside of the park while Jim Bebb and I headed for the Tan Vat access. The river was lifeless early in the morning but by 9:30 a grey cloud of miniature bluewing olives hovered over the riffles and the risers started shortly thereafter. Both Jim and I struggled to find the right fly. What frustration. By the time it was over my vest patch was loaded with flies that were all flatly refused. It turns out those finicky browns were keyed in on size 26 -28 bluewing olive spinners. Needless to say neither one of us had any of those. Kevin and Peet didn’t have a lot to report about their morning either.
Mark Borserine joined us for lunch further downstream at the Baptist Access. After lunch we split up. I was with the group that headed for the honey holes further downstream. The high water conditions earlier in the year had really improved the holes but the trout had apparently decided to take a long afternoon nap.
Optimism was high on Sunday morning as we headed to the Parker Access. Gary Bader had joined the group the night before and all six of us found plenty of water to fish. Jim Bebb, by now known to the group as Trekker, headed down stream for a little more solitude and undisturbed fish. What he found was a hornet’s nest on a sandy bank when he tried to climb out of the river. At least five of the little devils certainly didn’t demonstrate much southern Missouri hospitality. To make matters worse after it was all over Jim’s fly rod was still at the top of the bank. Jim will have to fill you in on how that turned out.
Mark, Jim and I extended our stay and Monday morning headed back to the park. There was a small area designated fly-fishing only that was full of big rainbows. Mark finally cracked the code with Bill Brant’s Nuclear Egg. He had several takes and brought one huge rainbow to hand. I took pictures with his camera to make sure we had captured the moment. Apparently I didn’t depress the button properly, so sorry, no big trout pictures for the newsletter.
The weather had turned grey with a light intermittent rain. One more shot at the upper spring before heading home. The Nuclear Egg produced another four or five rainbows but the rain and mosquitoes started to ruin the day. It was finally time to change into some dry clothes and head home. It had been an enjoyable outing. Montauk State Park is beautiful, well worth visiting and I know for sure that we left a few fish for you to catch.

Rockbridge comes highly recommended from several of our members. The trout are plentiful and the average size is 2 lbs. A record trout of 16 lbs has yet to be broken. If you want to read a little more and see a few pictures visit their website at www.rockbridgemo.com.
A few details:
The winter rates are $25 per person over the age of 13. Trout are $4.20 per lb. which includes cleaning, freezing and packaging. You must keep what you catch.
The catch and release rate is $80 per day from dawn to dusk. Barbless hooks are required. Please note the entire 2 mile stream is open in the winter for catch and release fishing.
No Missouri fishing license and trout stamp is required. Rockbridge is a private stream.
Accommodations:
Both houses and rooms are available.
Standard rooms are $89 per night double occupancy. Each room has 2 double beds and a bath.
The Red House, $270 per night is a 4 bedroom, 2 bath renovated farm house. 7 twin beds and 1 queen. Sleeps 8 – 10
The New House, $225 per night is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath ranch style house. 6 twin beds. Sleeps 6
Check out their website for additional housing information and two new places, the Oak Ridge Place and Ralph’s Ridge Condos.
Rockbridge has an excellent restaurant serving meals from 8 am to 8 pm daily. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are just a short walk away. Check out their Smoked Trout appetizer, well maybe not for breakfast. Unfortunately the Grist Mill Club Lounge is closed during the winter months so we will have to improvise.
Pull out the fleece underwear and that mad bomber hat you bought years ago for the winter fishing trip you never got to go on and let’s get 2009 started out right. Be sure to make your reservations early. The only crowd promises be us.

Bowing to the Bow
by Jim Jorgensen
Most of us have read articles on the Bow River in various magazines, and for many of us that frequent western rivers, the Bow is one of those destinations that has been on our “to do” list. A fateful string of events made the trip a reality. At the club auction three years ago Mark Borserine purchased a trip donated by Mark Sokoloski (ark@fishingpoleguidinginc.com) for a day of fishing on the Bow River. A year later, Mark asked if anyone was interested in the trip, because he doubted if he was going to find the time to go. Fortunately, my long time friend and fishing buddy, Jim Hess, from Madison Wisconsin, was accompanying his wife a business trip to Calgary and he had the time to go. I put him in touch with Mark by the time negotiations were complete Jim had a deal he could not refuse. Jim did that guided day on the Bow plus a few extra days and came back with rave reviews. Besides the beautiful scenery and fishing Jim was impressed with how hard Mark Sokoloski worked as a guide.
I have gone our west for an annual trout fishing trip, starting with the infamous ’86 hopper fishing my brother and I experienced on the Big Horn. Although I love the solitude of wading smaller streams, for larger groups, the larger rivers and tail waters provide opportunities for guided trips that are hard to beat. We have fished all of the classic western tail waters, but we are always looking for something new, so based on Jim’s report we planned a trip to Calgary. We usually do a whirlwind three day trip but decided to extend this trip to five since Jim had also reported that there were some nice streams in the “Livingston Range” south of Calgary that were good for walk and wade fishing. We had six of us for the trip and would divide the fishing into two days in the Livingston Range fishing the Oldman, Livingston, and Crowsnest Rivers (first day with guides), two guided days on the Bow, and another day on our own.
Since I have my one big trip every year I always recommend getting a guide, especially if you are fishing big rivers, and areas you have not frequently fished. On big rivers the guides pickup you up, provide lunch and beverages, row the boat, put you into the best fishing water, know what tactics to use based on your skills, which flies to uses in which situations, and will give you a history lesson on the stream and area as well. Their truck and trailer are there waiting for you at the takeout for the trip back to your lodging. At the end of the day for the added cost of a few beers you can also get a wealth of other information from them. I don’t know about the rest of you but for my 3-5 days of fishing bliss a year, I want to relax and catch fish, and having a guide is well worth it. As a bonus, Mark Solokoski also includes rods/reels, waders, and wading boots in his guide fees so it made packing a lot easier.
We flew into Calgary, rented vehicles, got our licenses and some assorted flies at Fish Tales Fly Shop www.fishtales.ca and headed south to Blairmore, AB. Blairmore is about 150 km (everything in Canada is metric) south of Calgary in the Crowsnest Pass area. Our guides met us at 6:00AM and we headed out in two groups to fish the Oldman and Livingston Rivers. I fished at the around the confluence of the Oldman River and Racehorse Creek. Well maintained forest roadways follow the streams and access to the rivers is easy. Up and down the streams the walking requires some attention as at least 75 percent of the walking is over boulders from around 12 inches in diameter down to pebbles. In August the river had about twice the flow of the Northfork but from the bank contours it was evident that during spring runoff the flows were much heavier. The elevation change is easily manageable but the boulders are tiring on the feet and knees. There is a variety of great variety of water to fish, some flat water areas, but mostly riffles and runs. Most of the runs were 24-48 inches deep with the riffles being less. Crossing the stream between these areas was easily managed. Fishing tactics varied but for the most part we used a variety of nymphs from sizes 14-16. We also fished some hoppers and smaller blue dun dries. All the fish were wild fish generally in the 12-18 inch range (mostly rainbows and cutbows and some browns). The second day we fished without guides on the Crowsnest below Blairmore and they on the Oldman as we worked our way back to Calgary.
We had two guided days on the Bow. The Bow is a big river, similar in many respects to the Missouri near Helena. The Bow headwaters start at Bow Lake in the northwest corner of Alberta’s, Banff National Park. The river through the park is fishable although the river is susceptible to discoloration from the milky sediment runoff. The best fishing is after the city of Calgary. One of the attractive things about the Bow is you can stay right in Calgary and have easy access to the river. There are three stretches of the river to fish each around 10-14 miles long with the first section starting within the City of Calgary. We fished sections 2 and 3. The general tactics is a basic nymph rig, 9 foot 3x leader, indicator at 9 feet with a #2 split shot about 18 inches above a two fly setup - large attractor on top and smaller nymph on the bottom. They liked bead head flies and added some small rubber legs on the sides of basic nymph patterns. The other method that worked well was a hopper dropper, using a large hopper pattern on top (foam body) and a beadhead trailing nymph about 2-3 feet below the hopper. Most of the fish were in the 16-20 inch range. The largest we caught was a 26 inch brown. All the fish were wild fish, mostly rainbows and browns.
Canada is a little on the expensive side. Although the exchange rate is even, prices in general are higher in Canada by about 20%. The only good deal we had was the guide fees, for the price we really got a great value. The guide fees were comparable to prices in the states for the same service. Another plus for going there is the great scenery. After the fishing trip, my wife arrived and we went on to Banff National Park. It is an area I want to fish again.
